Captain Sulistyo Nugroho Hanung joined AirAsia Indonesia as a Boeing 737 captain in March 2005. He brought with him 10 years of experience as pilot with Merpati Nusantara Airlines.

In June 2008, Captain Hanung was transferred to AirAsia Malaysia to be an Airbus A320 captain, before taking on the role as an Airbus A330 captain at AirAsia X Malaysia.

He was transferred to AirAsia X Indonesia in April 2015 soon after the airline was established. He was appointed as Chief Pilot of AirAsia X Indonesia in May 2015, before being promoted to Director of Flight Operations in July 2016 and eventually Acting CEO in September 2016.

Under Captain Hanung’s leadership, AirAsia X Indonesia resumed long-haul operations within a relatively short period of time with the opening of flights connecting Bali with Tokyo, Japan and Mumbai, India in May 2017. In July 2017, he was officially appointed as CEO of AirAsia X Indonesia.

Captain Hanung graduated from Flightline Aeronautical College in Auckland, New Zealand. He has over 15,000 flying hours under his belt.
