Indonesia AirAsia Gears Up to Boost Tourism in 2023

26 January 2023 - Indonesia AirAsia (IAA) has revealed plans to start gearing up to take off and grow Indonesian tourism in 2023, as the volume of air travel picks up in the region post COVID-19. In addition to increasing its aircraft fleet, IAA will also continue to strengthen its support for super priority destinations in Indonesia.

On a visit to Jakarta on Thursday, Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, AirAsia parent company, emphasized that AirAsia always puts forward our commitment to Indonesia. At the same event, Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, said, “In addition to growing our fleet to 32 from the current 17 this year, we are also planning to bring in the wide-body A330 for better connectivity with Northeast Asia including Japan, South Korea, China, as well as India. With this expansion, we look forward to developing logistics and strengthening our support to Indonesia in recovering and growing the tourism industry. ”

Lingam also stated his optimism towards the airline’s Indonesian business, saying “Our international operations are very strong in Indonesia, having brought in close to 5 million passengers before COVID-19, who represented 30 percent of international tourists arriving in the country. We have created nearly two thousand jobs in Indonesia and generated more than 3 billion dollars in tourism revenue, which has a strong growth potential this year, following a strong rebound in travel demand post-COVID-19.”

Capital A’s operating statistics results show that AirAsia has contributed greatly to tourism in Indonesia with AirAsia Indonesia flying 3.25 million pax with close to 23,000 flights on 16 operational aircraft in FY2022. Seats sold on international flights soared sharply by 7397% year-on-year. In 2019, with 28 aircrafts IAA successfully brought more than 4 million international tourists into Indonesia. Today, IAA is operating 17 aircrafts and is on solid path to recover routes and connectivity with its plan to have a total of 32 aircrafts in 2023.

The strong commitment of IAA in supporting the growth of Indonesian tourism is also shown by its support towards promoting Indonesia super priority destinations such as Danau Toba in Sumatera and Lombok in Nusa Tenggara Barat. In 2022, IAA opened the route of Jakarta - Silangit and since 2019 IAA has been operating Jakarta - Lombok route as well as launched the Lombok livery aircraft. IAA also continues to support and advocate the development of Indonesia’s economic and tourism development through collaborations with local governments and promoting the SMEs around the destination areas

Veranita Yosephine, CEO of Indonesia AirAsia, said, “We express our gratitude and highest appreciation to the government of Indonesia for the support and cooperation that has been given to the IAA so far. Rest assured that IAA will continue to make a positive contribution to the development and growth of the Indonesian aviation and tourism industry.”

CEO Fernandes said, “Everytime I come to Indonesia, I am blown away by just how much there is to see here. We would love for the world to come and see this beautiful country too. AirAsia is good at that, just like how we’ve turned things around for Bandung by running the first direct flights into Bandung.

Now that COVID-19 is largely over, we want to continue our dream that was stalled in 2019. That dream is to put places in Indonesia on the global map. I want to bring our logistics offerings here as well, with Capital A’s logistics venture Teleport, which is going to make it easy for people to send products fast and cheaply by air freight.

So on top of tourism, we are very keen to help many regions in Indonesia to provide cheap, easy logistics services, so SMEs and entrepreneurs can sell their goods around the world.”
