Perth, 02 June 2023 - Indonesia AirAsia today celebrated its maiden flights on the Jakarta-Perth route.
The new route launch marks AirAsia as the only airline flying direct between Jakarta and Perth post pandemic. Supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism Western Australia (TWA) and Perth Airport, the direct service will run four times a week initially, delivering over 1,400 visitor seats weekly through Perth and Jakarta Airports, with plans to grow in line with demand.
Two-way travel between Indonesia and Australia has always been incredibly popular for a number of reasons including the convenient flight time and appeal of both destinations for shopping, dining, adventure, beaches, as well as education. According to the Embassy of the Republic Indonesia, the number of Indonesian students in Australia this year alone have already reached more than 20,000, an increase from 15,000 in 2022.
Head of Indonesia Affairs and Policy of Indonesia AirAsia, Eddy Krismeidi Sumawilaga, expressed his excitement and optimism for the new route. “This is the first time Indonesia AirAsia has ever flown on this route - thanks to our tourism and airport partners for helping to make these new services a reality. Demand for our inaugural flights arriving into Perth Airport later today and departing early tomorrow morning has been very encouraging. From Jakarta to Perth we achieved more than 70% occupancy, and on tonight’s Perth to Jakarta flight, the occupancy rate has reached more than 80% which is a good sign of things to come.
“We foresee this new Jakarta - Perth route will also be very popular for leisure travelers wanting to see more of Indonesia and for Indonesians wanting to visit Perth for business, leisure, studying and visiting friends and family. This new route also enables Australians to fly from Jakarta to many incredibly popular tourist destinations, including our five Super Priority Destinations across Indonesian islands, namely Borobudur in Java, Danau Toba in Sumatera, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Likupang in Sulawesi and Mandalika in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. We are confident that, with the great support of Tourism West Australia and Perth Airport, these new services connecting the Indonesian capital with West Australia’s will continue to be in strong demand” Eddy continues.
The Western Australian Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Roger Cook MLA, said, “Today’s inaugural Indonesia AirAsia flight from Jakarta to Perth marks an important step forward in strengthening our valued relationship between these two neighboring tourism destinations. AirAsia is an important airline partner and Indonesia is a significant visitor market for Western Australia, representing our 10th largest international market by number of visitors in 2022. We are committed to working with Indonesia AirAsia to build on opportunities from this new flight route which further strengthens Western Australia’s reputation as the nation’s Western Gateway.”
Perth Airport’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Kate Holsgrove says “The new non-stop service linking Perth and Jakarta is a huge boost for Western Australian business, education and West Australia Tourism. The new Indonesia AirAsia service will initially fly four times a week and deliver almost 75,000 new seats into the Perth market. And with a population of 10.5million, there is a massive opportunity to entice not only tourists, but students from the Indonesian capital. As Western Australia’s 12th largest trading partner, the new non-stop service to the Indonesian capital city only presents more opportunities for Western Australia businesses.”
Meanwhile, The Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Perth, Listiana Operananta, emphasized her support for this new route, “Jakarta is a hub not only for places in Indonesia but also in South East Asia. Through the direct route from Perth - Jakarta we encourage more West Australians to visit many other destinations all over Indonesia, and vice versa. Jakarta and Perth have a lot in common, and it is only a 4 to 5 hours flight away, there is a lot of potential to explore further.”
The flights between Jakarta and Perth use the A320 aircraft with 180 seats capacity. The flight duration is 4.5 hours and the flight frequency is 4x a week with the schedule as below, with fares on sale now starting from AUD179/IDR1,299,000.
