MACAO, 5 November 2018 - AirAsia today celebrated its maiden flight from Kota Kinabalu to Macao, becoming the only airline to connect the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state to the “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure”.

To mark the occasion, a celebration was held at Macao International Airport that attended by Director of Tourism Malaysia Hong Kong, Tan Mei Leng; Acting Director of Macao Government Tourism Office, Hoi Io Meng; Cristina Gomes da Silva, Director of the Air Transport and International Relations of Civil Aviation Authority Macau SAR; Senior Marketing Manager of Sabah Tourism Board, Tay Shu Lan; Director of Marketing Department of CAM Macau International Airport, Eric Fong; Dato Lam Vai Chun;  Deputy General Manager of Nam Kwong Petroleum and Chemicals, Lao Kin Sang; Deputy General Manager of SEMAC Security Company, Gigi Wong; Finance Director of Menzies Macau Airport Services, Cindy Du; General Manager of Air Link Express (Macau) Mandy Huang and AirAsia Hong Kong and Macao CEO Celia Lao.

AirAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat said, “With this new route, we now fly to four cities in the Pearl River Delta from our Kota Kinabalu hub. With the enhanced connectivity from the newly opened Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge, our guests have the option to fly from Kota Kinabalu to Macao and return from either Hong Kong, Shenzhen or Guangzhou so they can make full use of their trip to really explore the region.”

“Kota Kinabalu is our second largest hub in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur and we will continue to grow our network from this city. We have launched three international routes from Kota Kinabalu this year to Bangkok, Kunming and now to Macao. This will help bring more visitors to the state and also help create more business opportunities and boost tourism receipts.”

Besides Macao, AirAsia also flies direct from Kota Kinabalu to 10 other destinations - Bangkok, Singapore, Manila, Taipei, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Kunming (commencing 30 November 2018) - and 8 domestic destinations, namely Kuala Lumpur, Tawau, Sandakan, Kuching, Miri, Penang, Kota Bharu and Johor Bahru.

Guests from Tawau, Sabah and Kuching, Sarawak can also fly to Macao using the AirAsia Fly-Thru service for seamless transit via Kota Kinabalu.
