AirAsia resumes flights to Macao, further strengthening its commitment to drive wider and affordable connectivity

Macau, 14 February 2023 – AirAsia, the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline has resumed its first passenger flights to/from Macao today, nearly three years after the route was suspended due to the pandemic. The airline is now flying Macao-Kuala Lumpur twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays, followed closely by the Macao-Bangkok (Don Mueang) route resumption commencing from 18 February and Macao-Manila from 2 March 2023. 

This long-awaited inaugural flight which took off from Kuala Lumpur this afternoon and arrived at Macau International Airport at 8:25pm today . Upon landing and departing, guests were welcomed by the representatives of Macao Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia of Hong Kong and AirAsia team, with special souvenir giveaways at the airport as part of the celebrations.

The recently relaunched flights are now available for booking on the airasia Super App and  website. The airline is working towards reopening more routes this year as it continues to add more flights to its schedule from March 2023 to meet significant pent-up travel demand following the strong recovery of the aviation industry in China. 

To date, AirAsia has already restored more than 18 routes to mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao, reconnecting passengers to many popular holiday destinations in Southeast Asia, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and many more. Passengers can also connect from Kuala Lumpur/Bangkok via AirAsia’s vast network throughout Asia to long-haul destinations such as Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Auckland.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said: “ Before the pandemic, Malaysia was one of the top 10 international tourist destinations and source markets for Macao. I am glad that AirAsia has resumed direct flights between Macao and Kuala Lumpur, enabling Malaysian tourists to revisit Macao, and also opening up more international tourist sources for this city. MGTO continues to work closely with the tourism industry, hoping that airlines will provide more air routes to and from Macao.”
