AirAsia X celebrates 17 years of connecting millions across Asia and beyond

Fares on sale today from AUD $159!

AUSTRALIA, 2 November 2024 – AirAsia X (AAX) proudly celebrates its 17th anniversary today, marking nearly two decades as a pioneering force in medium-haul, low-cost air travel. Since its inception in 2007, AAX has transformed the travel landscape by connecting more than 48 million guests across 20 medium-haul routes in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and beyond.

AAX’s network spans popular global destinations, linking vibrant cities such from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to Aussie favourites like Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Bangkok, Delhi and many more via its main hub in Kuala Lumpur. The airline’s Fly-Thru service has also played a key role, allowing guests to connect seamlessly to destinations across the larger AirAsia Group network. This transfer service, highly favoured by around 25% of international travellers, simplifies medium to long-haul journeys by providing seamless connections via Kuala Lumpur, enabling guests to access multiple destinations through a single booking without any need to transfer baggage or check into the onward flight.

In line with its growth strategy, AAX has successfully launched several new routes in the past year, including to Almaty, Kazakhstan and Nairobi, Kenya, which marks its first venture into Central Asia and Africa. AAX remains focused on exploring new routes and increasing connectivity based on demand and market potential, positioning itself as a key player in medium-haul, low-cost travel.

AAX also connects via Kuala Lumpur to the AirAsia Group network of over 130 destinations spanning Asia and beyond including Singapore, Bali, Phuket, and Langkawi to name a few, allowing for smooth transit and access to the broader AirAsia network.

AirAsia X CEO, Benyamin Ismail said: “Our journey over the past 17 years showcases our dedication to making travel accessible to millions across the globe. As we celebrate this milestone, we are preparing for an exciting step forward: unifying AirAsia’s aviation services under one group. With this acquisition, recently approved by our shareholders, we will be combining AirAsia’s short and medium-haul routes into a single, more efficient operation. This change will allow us to strengthen connections across our network, opening up even more destinations, enhancing service, and laying the groundwork for lower fares in the future. For our guests, this means greater choice, more seamless travel options, and access to an expanded route network, all while maintaining the affordability AirAsia is known for.

“We owe our success to the steadfast support of our guests, partners, and all stakeholders who have been with us every step of the way. Thank you for being a part of our journey – we look forward to many more years of connecting you with the world.”

In celebration of its 17th anniversary, AAX is launching a BIG Sale across its network, offering discounted fares to popular destinations from Kuala Lumpur to destinations such as Taipei, Chongqing, Nairobi, Almaty, and more, with fares starting from RM221* all-in one way on Economy (less than AUD $100) and from RM899* (under AUD$350) all-in one way on the award-winning Premium Flatbed seats.
