Travel Advisory: AirAsia cabin baggage guidelines for a smoother journey

SEPANG, 8 August 2024 ‒ AirAsia continues to enhance its operations to provide a more comfortable, safe and efficient travel experience for all guests. In line with this, the airline reminds all guests to strictly adhere to its cabin baggage policy, which is in place to support on-time departure by ensuring a faster and seamless boarding and disembarking process as well as fair access to the overhead compartments for all.

Under this policy, each guest is permitted to only bring a maximum of one (1) cabin baggage and one (1) small personal item onboard with a combined total weight of 7kg. This includes:

  1. One (1) Cabin Bag such as a trolley bag OR backpack

    • Maximum dimensions: 56 cm (H) x 36 cm (W) x 23 cm (D). This bag must fit in the overhead storage compartment.

  2. One (1) Small Personal Item such as a handbag OR laptop bag OR diaper bag

    • Maximum dimensions: 40 cm (H) x 30 cm (W) x 10 cm (D). This bag must fit under the seat in front of the guest except for guests seated on the first row or emergency seats.

  • Multiple items strapped, wrapped, or tied together are not counted as one piece.

  • Infants (below 2 years old) do not have a cabin baggage allowance, whereas children (2 years old and above) have the same allowance as adults.

  • Foldable baby strollers and wheelchairs are allowed as cabin baggage as long as they fit within AirAsia’s cabin baggage policy.

  • All items purchased at the airport form part of the cabin baggage allowance. Only duty-free items packed in a Security Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB), which is sealed (until your final destination) and accompanied by proof of purchase, are exempt from cabin baggage allowance—provided they meet the duty-free allowance of your destination country.

  • Smart baggage is allowed as cabin baggage if its non-removable batteries do not exceed 0.3g (lithium metal) or 2.7Wh (lithium-ion), it weighs within the baggage allowance of 7kg and is within the permitted size. Otherwise, the baggage should be checked in by removing the battery. Other terms and conditions and country-specific restrictions may apply.

Any cabin baggage exceeding the allowed weight or size limits must be checked in at the airport check-in counters. If the excess cabin baggage is not checked in at the counter, the airline may need to check it at the boarding gate, and a gate baggage fee may apply.

Adhering to the cabin baggage policy is crucial to avoid unexpected higher charges at the airport and reduce congestion which affects the guest experience, especially during boarding and disembarkation. Compliance also helps maintain safety and comfort, while promoting consistency and fairness, ensuring a smoother travel experience for all guests.
