AirAsia Cambodia celebrates first international flight from Phnom Penh to Kuala Lumpur

PHNOM PENH, 1 August 2024 - AirAsia Cambodia (flight code KT) celebrates another significant milestone today with the launch of its first international flight from Phnom Penh to Kuala Lumpur, just three months after commencing operations as Cambodia's newest low-cost airline.

Guests on AirAsia Cambodia flight KT168 were celebrated with an exciting performance at Phnom Penh International Airport before departure making their journey more memorable. The flight departed at 12.25pm (GMT +7) and landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Terminal 2) at 3.15pm (GMT +8) with a water cannon salute upon arrival.

As a truly Asean airline, this launch is timely as the region celebrates the 57th ASEAN Day this month. This inaugural flight marks a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity between Cambodia and Malaysia. The seven weekly flights complement AirAsia Malaysia’s twice-daily operations and demonstrates the airline’s commitment to boosting tourism and economic ties between the two nations.

CEO of AirAsia Cambodia, Vissoth Nam said: "The load factor of 99 per cent for our inaugural international flight today is extremely encouraging. Since our operations began in May, we have flown 25,861 guests domestically, and with the introduction of this international route, we aim to further strengthen the bond between Cambodia and Malaysia.

"Cambodia's tourism sector has been on a robust growth trajectory, with the government actively promoting the country as a prime tourist destination. In the first half of 2024 alone, Cambodia welcomed more than three million international tourists. We anticipate that our new route between Phnom Penh and Kuala Lumpur will further boost tourist arrivals between the two countries.

"As part of the AirAsia Group, we are dedicated to supporting Cambodia's tourism and economic development goals, in line with Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Kingdom of Cambodia's vision of establishing more direct flights from major global tourist destinations to Cambodia. Our sister company, Thai AirAsia, has  launched the Siem Reap-Phuket route with a three-weekly flight frequency starting from 29 October 2024.

“Additionally, by leveraging the Fly-Thru service, Cambodians can reach other exciting holiday destinations in Asia. We are committed to introducing more international routes across the region this year while conducting feasibility studies for destinations such as Cebu, Bali, and others to support the government's strategy."

AirAsia Cambodia has quickly established itself as a key player in the nations’ aviation industry, connecting Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville domestically. As part of the AirAsia Group, the airline's network extends to over 130 destinations across Asia and beyond, leveraging its strategic hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to facilitate seamless travel experiences for its guests.
