AirAsia continues to solidify Kuala Lumpur’s standing as world’s No. 1 low-cost megahub, reinforcing Malaysia and Asean’s global connectivity

KUL ranked No. 4 most connected airport globally and No. 1 most connected airport in Asia Pacific by OAG, driven by AirAsia's extensive network

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 September 2026 – AirAsia continues to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a global aviation hub, as its extensive network has enabled Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to maintain its position as the world’s fourth most connected international megahub and ranking No. 1 globally in OAG’s 2026 Low-Cost Megahubs Index.

KUL also retained the top position among Asia Pacific’s most connected megahubs, with extensive connectivity offered through AirAsia and other carriers connecting travellers to 154 destinations and providing almost 15,000 possible low-cost connections, according to OAG’s latest Megahubs report.

The report also named AirAsia as the dominant carrier at KUL, accounting for 34% of flights at the airport¹. Its robust network and high frequency of flights play a significant role in the breadth of connectivity available from Kuala Lumpur, linking the Malaysian capital with destinations across Asean, Asia, Australia and beyond, further supporting its position as a key getaway for regional travel. The recognition underscores the role of AirAsia’s extensive network in connecting Kuala Lumpur with destinations across Asia and beyond, while supporting the capital’s position as a key gateway for regional travel.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Group said: “Kuala Lumpur’s continued achievement as one of the world’s most connected aviation hubs reflects the strength of the network that AirAsia has built from Malaysia over the years. It also symbolises the collaborative partnerships that we maintain with MAHB, with a shared interest in supporting and growing the aviation ecosystem together. Despite the current industry-wide challenges that affect all airlines, as the dominant carrier in KUL, AirAsia remains focused on strengthening connectivity across the region while making travel more accessible to millions of travellers. Our extensive network will remain crucial in boosting tourism in Malaysia and Asean, especially during the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Beyond tourism, this connectivity also facilitates greater trade, business and regional mobility, further boosting economic spillovers in Malaysia and reinforcing Kuala Lumpur’s role as a key gateway to Asean and beyond.”

With its network continuing to evolve, AirAsia remains focused on enhancing its connectivity between Asean and key markets around the world, while creating more opportunities for affordable travel whilst building on its strength as a leading regional connector.
