AirAsia launches first direct international flight between Kuala Lumpur and Banjarmasin, enhancing Malaysia–Indonesia connectivity to 229 weekly flights

BANJARMASIN, 22 September 2025 – AirAsia today announced the launch of a new direct route connecting Kuala Lumpur to Banjarmasin, the largest city in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This new service further strengthens AirAsia’s extensive network between Malaysia and Indonesia, bringing the total to 229 weekly flights across multiple key cities.

Starting 20 October 2025, AirAsia’s new Kuala Lumpur–Banjarmasin route will give travellers easier access to South Kalimantan, a region known for its rich culture, stunning nature and growing economic potential. In line with the Wonderful Indonesia 2025 campaign, this new service is expected to boost connectivity and spread tourism benefits more widely across the region.

With this addition, AirAsia Malaysia will serve 18 destinations in Indonesia. From Kuala Lumpur, the airline currently flies to Jakarta, Bali (Denpasar), Medan, Yogyakarta, Banda Aceh, Makassar, Padang, Pekanbaru, Balikpapan, Labuan Bajo, Lombok, Palembang, Semarang, and Pontianak, with Banjarmasin to follow on 20 October 2025. In addition, AirAsia connects Kuching to Pontianak, and Penang to Jakarta and Medan, making it one of the most connected foreign carriers in Indonesia.

These latest expansions come as Indonesia targets 16 million international arrivals in 2025, with Malaysia consistently ranked among its top source markets. The timing also supports the Economic Development Plan of South Kalimantan Province, which aims to strengthen economic trade, tourism, imports and exports, as well as retail activity, cementing AirAsia’s role as the first international airline to operate in the City of a Thousand Rivers.

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, said: “As the low-cost airline with the widest international network operating in Indonesia, we are proud to further expand our connectivity with the new Kuala Lumpur–Banjarmasin service. Following our recent launches to Palembang, Semarang and Pontianak, this new route broadens our network and delivers even greater value, affordability, and convenience to our guests. Indonesia is one of our most strategic and fastest-growing markets, and with 229 weekly flights, we are proud to play a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations, stimulating tourism growth, and unlocking more opportunities for both business and leisure travel between Malaysia  and Indonesia.”

Bapak Muhammad Syarifuddin, Regional Secretary of South Kalimantan Province - Acting Head of South Kalimantan Province Tourism Agency said: “We are delighted to welcome AirAsia as the first international airline to connect Kuala Lumpur directly with Banjarmasin. In July 2025, South Kalimantan recorded 1.49 million domestic tourist trips, a 77 percent year-on-year increase with star-rated hotel occupancy at 52.17 percent.
